Six Sigma improvement projects can succeed only when organizational roles and responsibilities are clearly defined and aligned. The trained Black Belts and Green Belts can work well, but if the Champions and Master Black Belts lack training, they will not contribute to the project. The Champion has to play an active role in the Six Sigma project right from project selection to implementation. They are the key members for successful Six Sigma deployments. This helps them ensure that the operational level projects are aligned with strategic level business objectives. However, they should not intrude into the process undertaken by the Black Belts. They should conduct project reviews to ensure that the project is progressing as planned and that the results are aligned to the needs of the organization. A common mistake in the Six Sigma deployment process is the adherence to a preset timetable over the actual achievement of customer satisfation goals. The goals must be met at every step even if the timetable is not. It is the Champion's job to make sure the goals and the timetables are both addressed with proper weight. If the process goes off track, the Champion will regroup the team and get everyone back on course. The ultimate goal of Six Sigma is to achieve desired results. The Black Belts are the agents of change, and they make sure the goals are achieved. But it is the Champions who must ensure that the projects are deployed successfully with no adverse effect to the organization. They are accountable for monitoring savings as well as removing roadblocks along the way. If the Champion is not well trained, the project could fail in spite of the efforts of the rest of the team.
